For Mika: Community works for inclusive playground at Civic Park

Washington state legislators have put in a $257,500 funding request for Mika’s Playground, an inclusive playground designed for children of all abilities, at the future redesigned Civic Park in Edmonds.

The playground would be built in memory of Mika Zimbalist, a boy born with cerebral palsy.

“We knew at an early age that he would have physical complications and physical limitations,” said Mumtaz Zimbalist, Mika’s mother.

Rotarians asking state for help to fund all-inclusive playground at Edmonds’ Civic Park

For the past year, the Edmonds Rotary Club has been raising funds for an all-inclusive playground at the soon-to-be renovated Civic Park. And now Rotarians also hope to get some help from the Washington State Legislature.

Mika Zimbalist loved going to the park, but being born with cerebral palsy limited his options for playground equipment.

Wood chips would get stuck in his wheelchair. Playing on a swing required lifting him out of the chair and into the seat. When he grew, that was no longer an option.

Fundraising underway for fully-inclusive Mika’s Playground at Civic Park

My Edmonds News recently posted an article regarding the start of fundraising for Mika’s Playground.

…once Mika started to grow older, going to the park and playing on the playground with other children became much more difficult. Mika was born with cerebral palsy due to toxemia in utero, meaning that he used wheelchairs and walkers for the majority of his life.
